We really enjoyed the first full month of fall. Everyone in the family agrees that fall is the best season (followed closely by spring) and that Halloween is far more fun than Christmas. This month we enjoyed yummy fall food and drinks. T made me an apple cider doughnut cake for my birthday, and I made a moist and dense pumpkin cake with brown butter icing when our library friends came to visit last weekend. The whole family enjoyed warm apple cider on two occasions (both times at the West Portal Pumpkin Farm), and T and I spent many Friday and Saturday nights trying out different pumpkin craft beers. We settled on Dogfish Head Pumpkin Ale as our favorite.
October was the month when Seamus was sworn in as an official Cub Scout. The ceremony was followed by a night-time walk through the big corn maze at West Portal Pumpkin Patch. We spent a lot of time at the pumpkin farm since it's just down the road from us.
This month we also hiked the trails at Merrill Creek Reservoir, first with the Cub Scouts and then with our library friends. The weather was perfect on both days, and the second time we came upon the trail that lead to the ruins of an old farm.
And of course, this month we also spent a lot of time outside in our own yard and at the park in Clinton. We built a gnome home in our garden space, and we had fun collecting leaves and acorns and looking for wooly worms.
We're a little sad to see October go, but Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and we're already planning a big feast. The best thing about Thanksgiving is that Grandie and Grandpa will be spending it with us. The end of November can't get here soon enough.
