Vivian is Two!

On Sunday, our little Vivvie turned two! Seems like just yesterday I was resting up from her super-fast entrance into this world. And now she's a wild, happy, toddler who loves monsters, bad witches, and ballerinas.

Just like last year, we decided a low-key family party would be the best way to celebrate her big day. My parents came up from Tennessee to join us (and are staying on through Christmas).

Viv dressed in her favorite outfit: her Dorothy dress and her ruby slippers.

I love making the kids' birthday cakes each year, but I have to say this Humpty cake was hard. It wasn't my best effort, but I was happy it turned out at all. Sculpting with fondant is not easy, especially since I didn't ask for help from my sculptor-husband. As soon as Vivian saw her cake, she tried to take a giant bite out the middle. When I pulled it away from her, she started bawling. Next, year I'm going to let her wreck her birthday cake.

Thomas spent a couple of weeks making her a Humpty Dumpty doll from hickory. He even sewed the clothes from some old remnant fabric we had.

I made her a hand-felted necklace. And Grandie and Grandpa got her a vet kit complete with a sneezing plush puppy dog.

It was a great day for our beautiful girl spent with our favorite people. Happy birthday, Little Viv!

Snow Days

We've had three generous helpings of snow the past two weeks, and the kids have been reveling in it. I can't believe it isn't even officially winter yet...makes me wonder what January and February have in store.

O, Christmas Tree

This past Friday we drove out to our favorite Christmas tree farm (there are many in our area) and picked out a tree. Seamus and I had already fallen in-love with a beautiful eight-footer before T had even zipped up Vivian's coat and pulled her out of the car. We took the tree back to our house and spent the evening listening to Christmas music and decorating our tree. Both kids really enjoyed digging through the boxes of ornaments and finding old favorites--though I'm sure all ornaments seemed like new objects to Vivian. This year Seamus was able to help more than ever, even placing the star on top. Now we're just counting down the days.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Yesterday my parents came up from Tennessee to spend Thanksgiving with us, and this morning my mom and I were up and baking by 8 a.m. We didn't make the huge feast we usually make, but we did make all the Thanksgiving classics: turkey, cornbread dressing, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole (my favorite!), homemade whipped cream, two pumpkin pies, and a cherry pie (my dad's been craving it).

I love the way Thanksgiving makes the house feel with the hot smells of casseroles, turkey, and pies baking.

We had a lovely day today and are so happy that Grandie and Grandpa will be here for a few more days.

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving too!

In the Mail

Yesterday's mail brought the latest issue of NANO Fiction with my story "Segment" inside. I'm so honored to be part of this beautiful issue with Blair Austin, Sidney Thompson, and Jordan Sanderson. Also, Jenny Hart did all the artwork (I'm a fan of hers from way back). If you'd like a copy, you can order here.
