West Portal Pumpkin Patch

On Saturday we visited the West Portal Pumpkin Patch and had such a fun and beautiful day. Lucky for us, this farm is just half-a-mile down the road from our house.

The kids enjoyed feeding the chickens and goats, and the whole family had fun getting lost in the corn maze.

Afterward, we came home and made a pumpkin pie and some maple whipped cream. I love this time of year.

Happy Fall!

Happy 9 Months!

Actually, Vivian is about 9 1/2 months at this point. (Must be better about posting these monthly updates.) And she is a hoot and a character with a big personality just like her brother. T and I often wonder aloud about how two introverts ended up with very social, outspoken children who seldom show their shy side. Vivian laughs often and gets into everything. She loves wrestling with S and has learned how to blow raspberries on his belly.

By 9 months, Vivian has learned to wave hello and good-bye and does so to everyone and everything, including strangers in line at the grocery store, the kids in S's school, the cat, the trees outside our house, even the characters in storybooks. I can't tell you how many people approach me each time I leave the house because Vivian has smiled and waved to them without my knowledge.

Vivian has always been a curious baby, but this month, as she's become a more confident cruiser and crawler, she's actually been able to get into most things she's curious about. This includes terrorizing the cat and opening the kitchen cabinets to pull everything out.

She's gotten more confident at standing on her own as well and will do so often and for long periods of time.

Now that she gets around so easily, she spends a lot of time at the window looking at the trees.

This baby loves trees. We've all noticed how she stares at them on walks outside and how on car rides she looks up and out the window at the treetops a good deal of the time. She loves the feeling of leaves and sticks in her hands (and her mouth) and is always reaching for branches on our walks outside.

This month Vivian has been working on walking by using the same toy truck walker that S used when he was a baby. She's an expert at walking sideways while holding on to furniture, and each day her forward steps grow sturdier and sturdier.

Also this month, Vivian's attention span has grown enough for her to sit through a board book. She loves it when anyone reads to her, and her favorite books are the ones with actual photographs of animals and babies. Her favorite books this month are: Neighborhood Animals, Touch and Feel Puppies, and Peek-a-Book Baby Faces.

Even though she's eating breakfast and dinner and a snack in the middle of the day, she still nurses every 2-3 hours; this includes nighttime feedings. She naps for two hours in the morning, goes to bed at 8 pm and sleeps until 11:30 or 1:30. After that she's up every two hours to nurse throughout the night.

She weighs 19 lbs. and 14.5 oz. and is 27 1/2 inches tall. Her first teeth finally came in this month as well! Four of them came in at once, and she was not a happy camper (or sleeper) for a couple of weeks. She has four new teeth: her two top front teeth and her two bottom front teeth.

Perhaps the cutest accomplishment this month is that Vivian has learned to play peek-a-boo. She will hold a blanket over her face, hide behind it, and then pull it down with a dramatic swoop and a big smile. I promise to get a video of this soon.

Every day we see more and more of Vivian's personality shine through, and we're all enjoying watching this little girl grow and learn.

Lately

Please forgive the long, long blogging absence. The writer of this here blog has been deluged and overwhelmed by student essays and life in general. I thought I'd come up for air a bit and let you know what we've been up to lately (before the end of the week when I'm swimming in rough drafts of narrative essays).

Lately, we've been spending lots of time outdoors, hiking with friends...

finding salamanders and frogs...

birdwatching...

Female Mourning Warbler

and flower picking...

I've finished one knitting project (the Owlunder Sweater) and started another...

Seamus has been helping with dinner nearly every night and learning to bake and cook. Here he his honing his knife skills (with a butter knife because I'm too nervous to let him have a real knife).

Vivian has discovered my camera and grabs for it every time she sees it. If I'm wearing her, she absolutely has to clench the camera strap in her fist the entire time.

We've also had yard visitors...

There's also been lots of soapmaking and woodworking going on in preparation for the Etsy shop we hope to open soon. We're having a terrible time coming up with a name (suggestions are welcome). Neither of us are good with titles (hence the name of our blog).

It's busy over here, but with fall trees changing and Halloween coming up I should have lots of posts scheduled for October.
