Coney Island Adventure

We had been planning to go to the Central Park Zoo all weekend, but when Sunday came around and it looked as though we'd have thunder storms all day, we decided to go to the New York Aquarium on Coney Island instead. We had a great time, and wouldn't you know didn't rain all day. The Aquarium is right next to Astroland and right on the Coney Island boarwalk.

Seamus loved the giant tanks of sturgeons, jelly fish, Logerhead turtles, eels and sting rays.

But he was most fascinated with the sea otters, who kept swimming right up to him.

We viewed them from above:

and below:

He kept telling us he wanted to see the sharks, but when they swam by him, he got scared and wanted to move on to other animals.

He was very excited to pet a horseshoe crab, which we learned is not a crab at all but more closely related to a spider or a scorpion.

Perhaps our favorite part of the aquarium was the Sea Lion show.

We sat in the front row hoping to get a sea lion kiss, even practicing putting our hands behind our backs and leaning our cheeks forward, but when Osbourne the sea lion came up to Seamus, Seamus chickened out. He spent the rest of the show telling us he wanted a sea lion kiss, but the moment had passed. He had a great time anyway. Here's a movie we took of the sea lions dancing:

After the aquarium, we walked up and down the boardwalk and played on the beach.

Seamus was all about throwing his new plastic eel into the ocean....

but he was terrified of the tide getting his toes.

After awhile he got braver and had a big time splashing in the tide and playing in the sand.

Soon it was time to head back to New Jersey, and we boarded the train sunburned and sandy and quite exhausted. Only one of us got any decent sleep on the ride home:

What a wonderful family outing! I love the pictures of Seamus with his hands on the tanks, gazing in wonder at the otters. He seems SO grown up now!

I feel like I just went with you. These diaries are fantstic and I can just imagine how great it will feel for him to read these when he gets older.

Amanda--he seems like a little man to me too...but he still insists on being called a baby.

Kitty--I wish you could have gone with us. We miss you guys so much. Anytime you want to come up this way, please know you have a place to stay.
